Laurie Anderson - Strange Angels

Her name is Sister Teresa. I met her last Wednesday while I laid in the emergency room at Mercy General. She is an elderly retired nun who volunteers her time to visit patients.

[Let me preference this story by saying I was raised Catholic. In my first foster home, the Romero’s were devout Catholics hailing from a small vibrant village in Mexico. They sent me to catechism, taught me how to pray in Spanish at the age of five, and made sure I knew every essential saint.]

As I laid in bed fearing the worse about my heart, Sister Teresa stood by and engaged in a comforting conversation with me. She asked my name, what had happened, and if I had a faith. She is small in stature but immense in soul. She spoke softly as she quoted very familiar bible verses and assured me God had not left me to face this time alone. I’m not sure what it was about her presence, but tears quickly found my face as she spoke. She is completely un-assuming. In fact I’m certain she has passed through much of this life un-announced. To the masses she would not be readily noticeable. But to an individual with a terrified heart, she is a divine immovable image.

Though she is “retired” from being a nun, she has not retired from being used as a vessel of light to a hurting world. She gets up every morning to live her day with purpose and passion. She has lived her life sacrificing many comforts in order to share the message of God’s love. Whatever I will accomplish in this life will fail in comparison to Sister Teresa’s accomplishments for she has chosen a life not for the betterment of herself, but for the betterment of others. I do not admire her from an unrealistic view nor put her on an un-attainable pedestal, quite the contrary. It is her full humanity I admire and acknowledge as truly extraordinary. For in her humanity she has risen above human selfishness. To me, unselfishness is by far, the hardest attribute to achieve in life.

I live my life as a single woman and yet, there have been very few times I have felt utterly alone in this life. God has always been gracious to bring the right person into my life at the exact moment I am in need of a loving presence. Last Wednesday, at eleven in the morning, God sent Sister Teresa and I will forever be grateful for that exceptional sacred encounter.

[NOTE: After extensive tests it was revealed today there is absolutely nothing wrong with my heart and I'm deeply thankful!]

Sacred Friendship

As I continued taking deep breaths I thought of how many times your care has cradled me like a child. My heart has always found shelter within yours. You know every dark secret of my soul, and still you love me without reservation. You seem to know what I need even before I know what my need is. And whatever my need has been you have always met it with your love.

Just twenty-four hours before, my fears had overwhelmed every part of my senses thinking I was going to die. And now, within the healing balm of your hands, I dreaded nothing. My soul found peace once more within the rhythm of our sacred friendship.

For as long as my memory, it has been the two of us caring for one another. Each of us taking our turns to be each other’s touchstone and safe harbor. And though we have said all the words at least ten thousand times, I never grow weary finding new ways of saying how much I love you.

For all you give, I pray I have given the same if not more in return. And if I have ever once failed to thank you for the gift of your friendship, then let this stand as a lasting record. You are by far, one of the best gifts God ever gave me in this life.

It was the strength of your hug that caught me off guard. You held me firmly and didn’t let go till you knew I had felt every kindness flowing from your heart. I could have stayed in the shelter of your arms all night. It took every ounce of strength not to weep when you said “You’re trying really hard not to cry, I can tell.” Your intuitiveness was completely un-nerving. It was as if there was not a veneer of flesh guarding my heart and you could see it throbbing in pain. You knew not only what to say but the exact manner in which to say it.

I marveled at your compassion. Your mind is a brilliant organ of knowledge and wisdom. As we talked into the hours, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace flood my body. I knew, in that moment, I was completely safe. I can’t recall the last time I felt healed by being in the presence of another soul.

La mia bella amica, believe me when I tell you, everything you gave tonight healed the core of my being and from depths of my heart, I thank you.

My journey into the unknown began eight years ago in Paris. With a simple Canon camera and ten rolls of black and white film, I embarked on capturing the experience. To say the endeavor was life impacting would be an understatement. Everywhere I looked there were images that captivated my mind. I couldn’t put the camera down, not even when I was taking the bus with my mom; I had to take pictures of her enjoying the moment. By the end of the trip I was obsessed with photography.

To my deep shame I have to confess that for years I was a serious couch potato. I would stay home on the weekends to watch countless hours of mindless television. I would watch in amazement how others lived their lives, wishing I had the courage to experience similar adventures. To accompany me on this pointless endeavor was food. I ate out of complete boredom. I ate without a thought in my head as to what the calories were doing to my body and as the years continued my girth increased. Make no mistake - girth is a prison for one’s soul. Long before a physical death, girth will lead to an emotional, psychological, and spiritual death. If you dwell within its violent nature too long, you will give up on your dreams and worse, life itself.

I learned quickly you can’t take too many interesting photographs sitting on a couch. If I really wanted to capture brilliant images, (excuse the bluntness) I was going to have to get off my ass! And that is exactly what I did. If there is anyone who is seriously contemplating getting off the couch but doubting they have the strength to, let me encourage you by saying, you will reap beautiful rewards in your life. You will not regret the decision – not now – not ever. You can do it. Get up. Get outside. Seize the day!!!

I take photographs all the time now. No matter where I go or what I’m doing, the camera is close at hand. I turned off my TV for good last year. I don’t even pay for cable anymore. My days are filled with spending time with friends, going on adventures, seeing new places, experiencing new things, and capturing as much of life as I possibly can. I have experienced more dreams coming true these past 5 years than all the other years combined. Photography has made me want to live my life to the fullest. It has introduced me to a beautiful world and the journey has been absolutely joyous!

You see me with every brilliant color of love. You see beyond the veneers of fears, faults, and fervor. You see me as I am, for who I am; secure and insecure, beautiful and battered, molded and measured, imperfect and perfect, revitalized and re-birthed. There can be no pretenses in your presence. Unexpected Ways

Not sure how you do it, but you keep moving my heart in unexpected ways. When you leaned in to kiss me in the restaurant, I felt the flush of heat overwhelm my body. Our public display of affection was a brilliant affirmation of love. In times past, I would have felt self-conscious to be so unabashed, but with you, the emotions are so fluid I hardly noticed our surroundings. It’s as if you and I are the only persons in the room. Nothing and no one comes into view……only you.

I loved how you ordered the perfect wine for me and then told the waitress what I wanted to eat. I found your desire to take care of me intensely erotic. You seemed to enjoy the moment too which I found completely endearing.

I wish I could express how much you move me – right when the moment is occurring. The words have a hard time finding my lips which I realize is unusual considering how well we converse about so many things. Please know it is not due to a lack of desire, or fear, or reservation. It’s because the emotions are so intense, my mind needs time to catch up with my heart. We have worked hard to speak as freely as we do to one another. To say what we mean and mean what we say. I value that gift like I value life itself. I’m so deeply thankful we have reached that place in our relationship. I’m so grateful for all the unexpected ways our hearts are moved towards one another.

Right from the start…..I loved how you leaned in to me, grabbed my arm, and spoke to me as if we were the oldest and dearest of friends. Not the complete strangers we were to one another. Making me feel at ease and accepted. It was chemistry: instant ignitable chemistry. Like two crystallized stars slamming into one another creating a stunning constellation.

I couldn’t take my eyes off you. I watched how your body moved or rather, how you moved your body. I admired how you controlled the entire room with your presence. You were completely self assured, intelligent, strong, attentive, kind and commanding. For me, that is a lethal intoxicating combination. I felt every endorphin awaken and electrify. People seem to be the biggest disappointments in life especially when they pretend to be something they aren’t or more than they are. When they say one thing and do another. When they don’t even know their own minds to make them up. They leave a trail of carnage as they blunder through their expedition of relationships. They wander through life lost, confused, and drowning in their own meniscus. And those of us who come in contact with these individuals often become the walking wounded.

When I was in my 20’s I used to tolerate this type of individual. In fact, I felt compelled to be their friend. It took several years to realize that people who choose to be anything but themselves don’t want to live in truth. They prefer to dwell in the warmth of their delusion.

I no longer intertwine my life with these types of individuals. I refused to follow them down their demented ‘Alice and Wonderland’ rabbit holes where they dictate what reality is and what it is not. After years of finding the truth of who I am, I’ll be damned if I’ll allow anyone to lead me away from it. No matter what they promise in return…………their friendship, loyalty, respect or love. All they offer is skewed by their mendacity. In other words, they have no authentic affirmation of any entity. How can they offer that which they have no understanding of? Answer: they can’t.

Therefore, the moment I see an individual that is of this temperament I immediately disassociate with them. I do this in order to preserve my life and the lives of those I love. I make no apologies for disassociating. It may seem like a harsh decision to some, but for those of us who have had our hearts flayed, we understand how critical it is to remain devoted to truth.

You have every right to protect your life from those who seek to harm you. From those who are desiring to destroy your self worth in order to affirm their own. There is nothing wrong with establishing healthy relational boundaries for yourself and adhere to them at all cost. Never apologize for living in the beauty of truth.

My Mom My Angel

As a child, I have the unique privilege of remembering the day I met my mother. I was 8 years old. My social worker had taken me to the Oakland Zoo to introduced me to a couple who were looking to adopt a child. They had tried for several years to adopt a baby to no avail. Little did I know at the time how much my life would alter after meeting Marylin and Lee Henderson.

Vast chasms of time have escaped my memory. Scarcely can I call to mind the color of childhood toys, names of elementary teachers, enjoyment of first books, or even places visited, but meeting my mother for the first time is burnt into the crevasses of my mind. I can recall in detail her golden hair flowing over her brow, the gentle whisper she made speaking her name, and the flickers of light illuminating her face as she gazed into mine. So impacting was the moment, I briefly lost consciousness of my surroundings.

Early on in my youth while reading book, I saw a brilliant picture of an angel. Her translucent face, iridescent hair, and engaging eyes seemed as mysterious to me as her wings. It was this image which came to mind upon first meeting my mother. Her porcelain face was perfectly framed with golden strands and illumined by hazel eyes. She was absolutely radiant and had one of the kindest smiles I had ever seen. When her hand reached for mine, in an instant I knew, God had heard my tearful prayers and sent me an angel in the form of a mother. And at 8 years old, I just knew life was going to be so much better now that I had an angel for a mom.

My angel spent many years raising me to respect and love others. She instilled in me a deep faith, a sense of being compassionate towards those less fortunate, to be the first to laugh at yourself and have fun, to be thankful for life, to be loyal to family and friends, and to never lose hope. She also promised me that no matter what I did or where I went in life, her arms would always be my safe harbor. She kept that promised till the day she died. I never felt more safe in the world than when my mother was alive. She made my world rich with beauty and love.

I truly believe our introduction was destined. Life seems to be built upon immovable moments. We cannot predict nor control them. They are as numerous as the stars and their force intensely exposing. Each human encounter either falls quickly from view or possesses us. The memory of meeting my mother for the first time continues to penetrate the deep chambers of my heart and not a day goes by that I am not deeply grateful to have known her.

Life has not altered how I view her. She remains the light in my sun and the joy in my soul.

Visible Worth

The journey to get healthy has produced numerous revelations over the past three years. None more poignant to me than the reality of once feeling like an invisible entity and the psychological transformation of understanding the value of being visible.

Pursuing invisibility can take on various forms. For years, I’ve had one mirror in my home because I didn’t want to see even the shadow of myself let alone my actual image. My friends have been continually frustrated by my insistence they not take pictures of me. When entering a room full of people, I have often prayed I would be the last person noticed. Here is the tragedy of living an invisible life; when you do not acknowledge your visible worth as a person, eventually it will lead to the complete disappearance of your being. Worse, you will fervently embrace an indistinct view of yourself. Your reality becomes distorted by beliefs you’ve conjured in your mind, rather than the truth of who you actually are.

So where does the desire to be invisible come from? I think the answer is different for every person. For me, it came from not wanting to deal with the emotional aftermath of being raped at the age of 8 by a stranger. Make yourself undesirable to those wanting something desirable, and your person will remain safe from harm. You don’t fully understand why you are insulating yourself with a thick barrier of flesh, nonetheless, the goal is achieved….you are safe.

As you create a barrier to protect yourself from predators, simultaneously you build a prison for your being. Prisons were designed for criminals not victims. I find it tragic so many victims of child abuse become prisoners to addictions, self destruction, and self loathing. They embrace the idea they deserve further abuse rather than a life rich in love, joy and peace.

Acknowledging my visible worth has been absolutely terrifying at times. I won’t diminish the harsh reality with simplistic falsehoods. To do so, would do a great disservice to those individuals who are presently on the same journey. Make no mistake, it takes determination, courage, resilience, grace, humility and integrity to acknowledge your visible worth in this world. It also requires you to fully embrace the love of family and friends. Those beautiful souls who love you so much, they will not allow you to live your life in an invisible state.

I have a few friends who are much like me - breaking free from the invisible to live visibly. Their journeys are not identical to mine, still, they are making declarations to live in the truth of all they are. They are acknowledging their lives are of great worth with every positive choice they make. I stand in awe of their immense courage.

And there are other friends who are contemplating becoming visible. They are battling deep fears and are hesitant to make the necessary changes. It is for them I write these words. I believe when we speak the truth about our own journeys, it produces healing and courage in others.

Let me clarify to those friends who are contemplating embracing their visible worth that this process is not just about having positive thoughts about yourself and others. It’s more than that. It’s about understanding you being here on this earth is not a mistake. You don’t exist because of some mysterious physiological happening within the universe. You are here for a reason and a purpose. Your existence matters and when you live an invisible life you deny your very existence.

The number one reason you should live a visible life is because once you embrace your visible worth, nothing and no one can take it away from you. Once you understand you are worthy of being loved and giving love, it alters how you view yourself and others forever. Understanding your visible worth is an essential catalyst in defeating addictions, self destruction and self loathing as well as finding true inner peace. Becoming visible is a declaration to the world of your existence and of your immeasurable worth. Trust me when I say, once you embrace this powerful truth you will live your life with deliberate purpose and joy.

My hope is that every soul will come to the deep understanding of their visible worth and live in the beauty of it.

Mom - you would have been 74 today. I woke up remembering what you said to me only a month before you died, “I wanted to be here so much longer for you honey.” If a mother’s love could suspend time, your love for me would have altered the world. I wish I could will my soul to soar to you so we could celebrate your birthday together. I would shower you with hugs, kisses, laughter and any gift you wanted.

Of all the many gifts you unselfishly gave, the one I’ve come to treasure most is your abiding faith in God. When I feel myself waiver under the crushing burdens of life, I recall the many times you trusted God to hold all things together. The faith you demonstrated lives beyond this fragile sphere and dwells deep within my heart. Your faith continues to transform my life in ways I can’t explain or understand. I keep gazing at a blank page hoping one day I’ll have the courage to write the story. Years of journaling has brought me closer to finding the truth of then, of now. There are times our hearts are not ready to recognize the truth, let alone speak it. I have tried to evade reality, still, no matter how far I journey, time returns me to a distinct origin.

It is the process of letting go I fear the most. Once the words are on the page they are on full display for the entire world to judge. Like a painter who throws the colors on a canvas in the hope they will find their reality, so too the writer transfixes on the whiteness dreading they may never find the fortitude to speak the complete truth.

If I recount the story candidly, it will mean releasing a life-time of pain. When I contemplate the reality of that truth, paralysis sets in my heart. I hope one day my soul will awaken to this simple truth; our fears are often nothing more than - harmless shadows.

Kelly is an award winning artist, educator and graphic designer. As a student she won The Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition and received a scholarship to the University of Akron. She studied fine and applied arts with an emphasis in drawing. She specializes in acrylic and mixed media abstract paintings and also does graphic design work and photo retouching. Kelly is also a jewelry designer and has been creating and selling jewelry in the Los Angeles area for many years.

Her paintings are full of texture and color and reflect her personality. Her painting styles range from Asian influenced to brightly colored abstracts.

Kelly surrounds herself with inner zen and positive energy and her art reflects this. Her artistic influences are drawn from Buddhism, inner spirituality and a positive attitude. Once in her presence, people are drawn to her personality and creativity. She is a true artist in her heart and in her spirit.
